Contribution to health and well being from other sectors

We have identified four ways in which we think NHS staff, organisations and health and care systems can have a positive influence on health and wellbeing: as a direct provider of health care; as a role model employer; as an anchor in the community and as a system leader and partner.

The review formed part of the evidence base for the UK Government’s Health, Work and Well-Being Strategy[2] published in October 2005. There are economic, social and moral arguments that, in general, good work is the most effective way to improve the wellbeing of individuals, their families and their communities.

A society’s well-being can be determined by the extent to which they are resilient, build capacity for action, and are prepared to transcend challenges (Glossary of Terms 2021). WHO works with Member States and partners to advance well-being as it pertains to global health and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
